Osha Trail in Lincoln National Forest
Quite recently, we moved to a small town in New Mexico. Although, it’s taken me a bit longer to adapt compared to other places we’ve lived, as of late, I’ve made an effort to get to know the area just like I would anywhere else…I check out the hiking trails.
Tucked away in the Sacramento Mountains within Lincoln National Forest, you’ll find Osha trail. This is a very popular trail in the area- one I return to whenever I find I only have a small chunk of time to run off to escape the unbearable desert heat. If you’re looking for a shorter trek, away from the noise of busier areas, allowing you to enjoy the feeling of wandering through the woods, keep reading.
Quick Glance
Distance: 2.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 413 ft
Level: Easy-Moderate
Time: 1 hour & 10 minutes
Traffic: Medium
Osha trail is a well marked and maintained 2.5 mile loop, that provides 413 ft of elevation gain. AllTrails categorizes it as a moderate hike, but for experienced hikers, I would say it falls more on the easy-moderate end of the spectrum. You’ll want to watch where you step at certain points, there are stones and roots that pepper the ground throughout the trail. And keep your eyes peeled- you may encounter some wildlife.
Getting There:
The trail has it’s own parking lot, with plenty of spaces. I’ve always gone in the morning, and have yet to find an instance where there weren’t any spots available. You’ll head left after the sign and follow the loop until the split. Keep in mind that there is no restroom at the trailhead.
The Hike:
I prefer this trail counter-clockwise; that way, you experience the best view at the end, but this is just a personal preference. If you choose to follow my lead and take it counter-clockwise, pretty early on, you’ll encounter an early junction where the trail briefly links up with Pines trail. Once you see the sign, you’ll continue left and follow this for about .2 miles (maybe even less). You’ll find clear signage to the left, bringing you back to Osha. However, if you’re seeking a longer hike, you can continue on with Pines Trail (which is also a loop”. It will link back up with Osha, creating a roughly 6.2 mile hike!
After re-entering Osha trail, you’ll continue on, experiencing mostly a lovely shaded trail, surrounded by beautiful greenery- Douglas Firs, Ponderosa and Pinyon pine. For the best lunch spot, I’d wait until you come to the clearing. You’ll know it when you see it, and there’s a bench for you to sit and enjoy.
As you continue you on, take each turn with a little caution. It isn’t uncommon for mule deer to be out on the trail, they’re super majestic to see and typically non-aggressive. Just ensure you do not approach them, give them space to clear off the trail- they’ll typically leave shortly after seeing you- and avoid any actions that might disturb them. We’re visiting their home, so be respectful and enjoy your moment with nature.
As you approach the end of the trail, you’ll have a bit of a steady incline. Eventually, the trees with thin out, revealing a beautiful view of Lincoln Nation Forest! I really appreciate that you can’t see any of the main road from this spot- it’s just a gorgeous view of the forest from every angle!
After taking in view, you’ll have about another 10-15 minute walk before you are led back to the start of the loop. From there, you will make your way back to the parking lot- or go for round 2 if you have time!
Final Thoughts:
Whether you live in one of the small towns surrounding the Sacramento Mountains, or are simply visiting for some time to experience the great outdoors, I highly recommend you check out Osha trail. It’s suitable for all experience levels and can be completed in about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Allow yourself to get lost in nature, with comfort of knowing you’re on a well-marked path that may lead you to many wondrous things!
